Accessories

Mills offers a variety of accessories that can add to the the energy efficiency of your home and reduce energy costs. Depending on the design and specific needs of your home, some of these may be more important than others. Contact us and we will help you determine which are best for you.

Attic Tent

The access door from your home into your attic, usually in a hallway or garage, can be a serious liability to your home’s energy efficiency. Typically made out of 1/8” plywood, the access door offers almost zero insulation and allows heat from your attic to enter your home. An attic tent is a specially-designed insulated covering that goes over the access door, providing much-needed insulation while still allowing unhindered access.

Water heater blanket

Unless your water heater’s storage tank is already well-insulated, with an R-value of at least R-24, adding insulation to it can reduce standby heat losses by 25%–45%. This will save you around 4%–9% in water heating costs. If you don’t know your water heater tank’s R-value, touch it. A tank that’s warm to the touch needs additional insulation. Mills can help you determine if your water heater needs a blanket to add insulation and install it in a matter of minutes.

Light guards

Recessed lighting looks great but can hurt your home’s energy efficiency by causing gaps in your attic insulation. But covering the back ends of can lights with insulation is not only against building codes, it causes your lights to overheat – a huge fire risk and damaging to bulbs. Light guards are covers that we will put over your lights inside your attic to keep insulation back without reducing energy efficiency.

Baffles

Baffles hold loose insulation away from your attic’s soffit vents. Your attic needs balanced, natural ventilation. Proper air flow is crucial to extend the life of your roof. Good attic ventilation prevents ice damming in the winter and reduces heat buildup in the summer. By holding back the insulation, baffles allow air to freely enter the attic space and travel upward and out through exhaust vents.
