Attic Ventilation

Proper ventilation is the only way an attic can “breathe”, removing heat that seeps into your home in the summer and moisture that causes great damage in the winter.

Using a system of vents along the eaves and rooftop of your home completes and efficient upgrade of your attic and creates a continuous flow of cool dry air to protect your investment in your home. After all, the cost of improving your ventilation is nothing compared to the cost of a new roof.

Mills offers a full line of attic ventilation products to meet your specific needs. From state-of-the-art solar powered exhaust fans to low profile box vents, we have it all.

Our online ordering tool will guide you though your choice of roof vents, making recommendations based on the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

  • Intake vs. exhaust ventilation?

Both intake and exhaust ventilation are required for a balanced system. Intake vents or soffit vents are installed along the eave of the house.  They allow cool, dry air to enter the attic at the lowest point, which is pulled out at the highest point of the roof with exhaust vent.

  • What is NFA (net free area)?

Net free area is the total unobstructed ventilation space through which air can enter or exit by a non-powered vent.

  • How much ventilation do I need?

Building codes only provide for a minimal amount of ventilation.  Ideally you should have one square foot of space, or net free area, for every 150 square feet of attic floor space.  This net free area amount should be split evenly between intake and exhaust ventilation to provide a balanced system.
