Roof Vents

Exhaust - Wind Turbine VentExhaust - Box/StaticExhaust - Solar Vent

  • Wind Turbine

Wind turbines use the natural force of wind and air pressure to spin and vent out stale attic air.

They do it with a series of specially shaped vanes that catch the wind and provide rotary motion. This pulls hot, humid air from the attic. Turbine vent relatively low-cost, and do a good job of removing heat from an attic.

There are several size and color variations of wind turbines.  Mills installs 14″, internally braced models that are attractive and cost-effective.

  • Box Vent

Box or static vents provide the lowest cost solution for roof exhaust ventilation.

Like other exhaust vents, louvered box vents passively remove damaging heat and moisture from the attic.  One drawback is their size, several box vents are required to achieve the same ventilation as one wind turbine.  Because it takes so many of these vents to adequately ventilate an attic, it may be advisable to add a different type of vent which provides more net free area so as not to clutter the rooftop with vents.  Another good use for box vents is to “open up” the roof over a particular to relieve built up pressure.  A common example of this is a kitchen nook that extends out of the building footprint of your home and that has attic space above it, but has no existing ventilation.  Often a single box vent will allow the air to escape that part of the attic, which will help maintain air temperatures inside that room.

  • Solar Fan

Solar vents are roof mounted exhaust vents that include a motor and fan powered by the sun.

Solar vents represent the most advanced ventilation technology, and offer a more effective alternative to wind turbines, and a more “green” alternative to powered attic fans.

  • Ridge Vent

A ridge vent runs the entire length of the roof peak, blending into the roofline for a more attractive home.

Years of research prove that a ridge vent with external baffles and an internal weather filter, combined with under eave venting, is the most efficient system you can install.

    Ridge Vent Benefits:
    • Provides evenly distributed ventilation along the entire underside of the roof
    • Slim design, visual appeal
    • Provides a higher volume of airflow per square foot of attic area than any other fixed-vent system
  • Powered Vent

Power vents move the highest CFM (cubic feet per minute) of any other vent, however they have a large drawback, they use electricity.

Because static static vents work well and don’t cost money to run, we do not recommend adding more power vents to a home.  Mills does offer power vents, however the homeowner will be responsible for hooking up the electricity.
