Like other exhaust vents, louvered box vents passively remove damaging heat and moisture from the attic. One drawback is their size, several box vents are required to achieve the same ventilation as one wind turbine. Because it takes so many of these vents to adequately ventilate an attic, it may be advisable to add a different type of vent which provides more net free area so as not to clutter the rooftop with vents. Another good use for box vents is to “open up” the roof over a particular to relieve built up pressure. A common example of this is a kitchen nook that extends out of the building footprint of your home and that has attic space above it, but has no existing ventilation. Often a single box vent will allow the air to escape that part of the attic, which will help maintain air temperatures inside that room.
