Radiant Barrier

A radiant barrier is a highly reflective material applied to the underside of your roof that is designed to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss in your home.

  • How does a Radiant Barrier save you money?

Attic radiant barriers save you money in a couple of ways.

    1. Radiant barriers help keep ductwork cool.  In many parts of the country, duct work from your heating and cooling system runs throughout the attic to various parts of the house.  When your attic becomes super-heated, so does your duct work, making the system work harder to deliver cool air. A Radiant Barrier can lower the temperature in your attic as much as 40 degrees, helping your HVAC system run more efficiently.

    2. Radiant barriers relieve pressure from your insulation. Attic insulation slows down heat transfer from the attic into the living space. When an attic becomes super-heated, the insulation isn’t able to stop all of that heat from entering the house.  Again, removing 20-30 degrees of heat from the attic lessens the load on your insulation and helps your HVAC to run less.

  • What type of Radiant Barrier does Mills offer?

Mills offers two types of radiant barrier for your attic: spray and foil.

Radiant Barrier Spray is a reflective coating, essentially metallic paint that is sprayed to the underside of your roof.  Our spray blocks 80% of the suns’ heat from entering the attic and is extremely cost-effective because of its relative ease of application.  Radiant Barrier Spray combined with attic insulation is a powerful energy-saving combination.

Radiant Barrier Foil is a durable, three ply aluminum foil product that works on the same principles as radiant barrier spray, however radiant barrier foil blocks 97% of the suns’ radiant heat, compared with 80% reflectance of the spray product.  The largest drawback with this type of radiant barrier is cost.  There have also been reports of weakened cell phone signals in homes with foil barriers

Ultimately, radiant barrier spray and radiant barrier foil both offer protection from the heat, and the one that’s right for your home will depend on the goals of your project.  Use our savings tool to visualize the payback so you can decide which one is right for you.
